Parent Literacy
Enrichment
The Parent Literacy Enrichment program presents
standards-based, grade-level-specific tools and techniques that parents
can use at home with their child(ren).
The program consists of two 2-hour workshop
sessions for parents of pre-kindergarten through third grade students. Retired
school teachers lead the sessions that not only teach academic skills
but also communication and nurturing skills for young learners.
Dr. Maxine Huffman, retired education professor
and reading specialist from Indiana University-Purdue University at Fort
Wayne, develops the workshop curriculum. The sessions are based on the
same Indiana State Standards that classroom teachers present, as well as
elements required by "No Child Left Behind."
Allen County Education Partnership
offers grade specific workshops both in the fall and spring. Class
schedules are listed on our calendar link about six weeks in advance.
Please call our office at 260.423.6447 to register.
Childcare
and light snacks are provided at MOST locations and transportation is
available upon request.
Parents that attend both sessions receive a "Fun
Filled Family Learning Kit", a collection of books and activities valued at
approximately $100.
Outcomes Achieved for the 2008-2009 School
Year:
- 100% of parents who completed the workshops
were more confident in their ability to help their child read and
write
- 579 families completed the PLE workshops for
Pre-K through third grade students
- Majority of teachers report improvement in
students' language arts abilities whose parents have attended the
PLE workshops
